Henry and Will from Year 10 competed in the English Schools Athletics Association National Championships at Alexander Stadium Birmingham (this is the stadium where the 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held). over last weekend. The competition is often nicknamed the 'Schools Olympics', and over 2000 athletes will have competed over the weekend.
This is the 4th largest athletics event in the world, and the largest entirely amateur event, with previous winners including Mo Farah, Jess Ennis-Hill, and Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
Henry ran a heat on the Friday in order to qualify for the final of the 1500 metres on the Saturday. He ran a great tactical race in the final, taking the lead with around 100 metres to go and then unfortunately tying up around 30 metres from the finish which allowed some of the chasing pack to overtake him, leaving him in 6th place.
Will ran a straight final on the Saturday in the 3000 metres and worked his way through the field over the last couple of laps, finishing strongly to go from around 9th to 4th place on the last lap.
Both were competing against rivals a year older than themselves, and hopefully next year will achieve podium finishes when they are competing at the same age level.
From everyone at Kepier, well done!!!
