Kielder Observatory Trip

Just before Christmas our Head of Science Mr Devlin took a group of learners to the 'Dark Skies' observatory at Kielder to allow them to study the night sky using the excellent facilities there.

The trip was made possible by funding obtained from The Institute of Physics, without which the trip could not have taken place.

Mr Devlin said "we took a group of Year 9 learners to Kielder Observatory, for a personalised session on the Solar System and the physics of stars.  They used the telescopes to observe the Moon, Venus, Mars and a binary star system.  The learners were also able, due to the unique black sky environment, to see the Milky Way that we are a part of.  Everyone enjoyed it and was wowed by the sights they saw - and were delighted that the skies cleared just in time for our arrival. We are extremely grateful to The Institute of Physics for funding this trip."
