Primary Hockey Festival

Primary Hockey Festival

This is part of our work to encourage young people into all forms of sport, ending with city wide finals in the summer of 2017.

We had over 100 children from the primary schools in attendance, the event being organised by our PE and Primary Sports Link Teacher Miss Cullen, but refereed and supported by Kepier's Young Sports Leaders, who are vital to ensure these events can go ahead.

The event was won by Newbottle Primary School, with their second team and Hetton Lyons and Shiney Row schools qualifying for the next stage of semi-finals. However, all those who attended had a great time and all of them are winners!

Kielder Observatory Trip

Just before Christmas our Head of Science Mr Devlin took a group of learners to the 'Dark Skies' observatory at Kielder to allow them to study the night sky using the excellent facilities there.

The trip was made possible by funding obtained from The Institute of Physics, without which the trip could not have taken place.

Mr Devlin said "we took a group of Year 9 learners to Kielder Observatory, for a personalised session on the Solar System and the physics of stars.  They used the telescopes to observe the Moon, Venus, Mars and a binary star system.  The learners were also able, due to the unique black sky environment, to see the Milky Way that we are a part of.  Everyone enjoyed it and was wowed by the sights they saw - and were delighted that the skies cleared just in time for our arrival. We are extremely grateful to The Institute of Physics for funding this trip."

Performance at Civic Centre

Today, the City of Sunderland Youth Jazz Orchestra (COSYJO) performed at the civic centre in front of an audience consisting of the Mayor, civic leaders, council staff and members of the public.

Cosyjo is made up of pupils from several secondary schools across the city, including five learners from Kepier. They are rehearsed and conducted by our Head of Music John Hall, and come into Kepier on Sundays and evenings throughout the year to practice, all of them giving up a great deal of their free time.

In the hour long performance today, they played a range of Christmas favourites, with Kepiers peripatetic music teacher Andy Moon playing and singing.

As well as Cosyjo, the day featured performances by Ryhope Infants School choir, and pupils from Barbara Priestman school who played and sang.

It was a fabulous event much enjoyed by all who attended.
